I don't really trust shops' hamster food because, in my opinion, they are full of artificial flavors and added colors that don't add anything to our hamsters' nutrition. They also tend to contain lots of sunflower seeds, which have almost no nutritional value and can make our pets fat.
Here's what I prepare for them. It can be a little pricy when you buy all the ingredients at once, but I guarantee you it will last for months. (Note: Just check for expiration dates in every ingredient; this will be the expiration date for your seed mix).
Ingredients:
- A hamster food to be used as a base (try to get the best one possible, and take away all the sunflower seeds you can, as well as artificially colored seeds)
- Integral rice.
- Barley: Integral cereals are rich in fiber, group B vitamins, vitamin E, riboflavin, niacin, and minerals such as iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, selenium and phosphorus.
- Dog or cat food: A good source of proteins. Not as good as fresh meat, egg or cheese, but contains them as well and can be added in food since lasts a lot.
- Integral oats: Contains iron, zinc, calcium, iodine, phosphorus, and group B vitamins. It's great for the stomach.
- Almonds and nuts: Hamster's love them equally or even more than sunflower seeds, yet these are a lot more healthier and energetic.
- Sesame seeds: Contains a lot of fiber. It contributes in a better digestion and increases natural immunity.
- Linen seeds: Contain 27 known anti-cancer compounds and a great amount of fatty acids from group omega 3. Provides with a lot of energy.
- Wheat germ: Rich in proteins, fats, aminoacids, minerals and vitamins (A, E, B1, B2, B3, B6). It is the ingredient that contains the largest amount of vitamin E. It contains a lot of folic acid and vitamin K. Great for skin and fur.
This is what it all looks like:
These are some ingredients you can also add and will be great for your hamster; I don't use them because I was not able to find them (I live in Costa Rica):
- Soy seeds: They contain proteins, lipids, fiber, essential aminoacids, vitamin A, D and E, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and iron. It contains potent anti-cancer compounds.
- Chamomile: Great for digestion
- Carob: Has nutritional and medicinal properties because of the large amount of aminoacids, vitamins and minerals in it. They are also good for rodents' teeth.
