Hello,
My name is Ashley, online I go as Allenya or Ami mostly.
I share my home with three ferrets, two snakes, a cat and a boyfriend. My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 8 years, we got the snakes about 6 months after we got together. We have had our kids (Ferrets) for nearly 2 years and our cat adopted us almost a year ago.
The snakes are fed a combination of frozen-thawed and live mice and dwarf hamsters. Ferrets are on a raw and whole pray diet. The cat has a easily upset tummy but I am slowly trying to get him on raw as well.
I have tried breeding mice twice now but things never work out for me. I've breed Dwarf Hamsters for nearly as long as I have owned snakes. I started it as a food source for my snakes. I felt store bought was to costly for animals I felt didn't look very healthy and often seemed under sized for the age I would request.
This was when I first tried mice but I believe that all the mice I got had neurological problems. All they did was run in circles or do back flips for the three days before they all just died. And in that three days the whole house smelled of mouse yearn.
A friend suggested the dwarfs and I tried it. The smell less by far. It took a lot of work at first because all hamster cages have bars space to far apart for dwarfs, modding them was required. But I quickly loved it. They are fun and I enjoyed watching the colors I would get. My first male was am amazing pet.
I currently don't have a colony. When we moved the new hamham area was not ideal for them. To close to our front door and the draft got to them. I tried to keep there area warm with a heater and keeping the door closed but it seems that one got sick and it spread quickly. Dwarfs are hard to get in my area so I haven't been able to start over again yet but I plan too.
Thank you again Katt for making this forum.
